Description

The Rainbow Pitta is a small, brightly coloured bird found in northern Australia. It is known for its striking black body, green back, bright blue wing patch, and red belly, with a chestnut stripe on its head.

They generally range from 16–19 cm in length and weigh around 52–70 g. Despite their size, their bold colours make them stand out in the dim forest undergrowth.

Diet

Rainbow Pittas feed mainly on insects, small invertebrates, and worms. They forage on the ground, flicking leaf litter aside with their beaks to uncover prey.

Habitat

Rainbow Pittas live in monsoon forests, mangroves, and dense coastal scrub of northern Australia, particularly in the Top End of the Northern Territory. They prefer shady, moist environments and often nest on or near the ground.
